loading homepage

Hello, I’m using the theme Paradise hotel for my Bed and Breakfast site. Now I have a few questions. The most important is the speed of loading the homepage:
In the top slider I have several Photos created 94- x 375 px and I think this is OK. Now I created for my rooms several photos, in first instance 800 x 600 px. I find out that the load time from my site is very slow, off course pictures take a lot of time for loading a page.
So I changed the first picture of my first apartment, because this picture is shown at the homepage.I changed it from 800 x 600 into 800 x 375 px, for my home page is this size perfect but if I want to view the whole picture from the apartment is this not possible. is it possible to create a hyperlink from the pictures 800 x 375 to the same picture 800 x 600 if a client hoovers over the picture.
Than my other question is that all the pictures of the rooms are loaded in the homepage, so if somebody wants to see my site it takes a long time to load a page with 4.2 MB. How can I improve the load time of my home page.
Another question is I want to change the bckgroubf color of my site, Please can you tell me where I can find some information.Thanks in advance.
